OUR ENF SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS FOR 2009

Each year the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks administer the Most Valuable Student scholarship award program throughout the nation.  Awards are given at the district, state and national levels.  This year's winners at the district level for the North East district of Georgia were Kimberly Rary and Kurtis Doehrman.

Kimberly Rary  is from Covington and was awarded $1,250.00 in scholarship funds.  Kimberly is a very active student who plays tennis and softball at Alcovy High School.  As a senior, she is slated to be this year's Valedictorian .  She had accomplished this while working for Subway restaurants and participating actively in her church youth group.   Kimberly is a STAR student by definition and membership and she gives credit and thanks to her teacher of influence Anita Anderson.  Her plans for the future include attending the University of Georgia as an honors student where she will have already earned credit for college courses based on higher level Advanced Placement classes in U.S. History and Language & Composition that she has taken.  Kimberly’s current plans are to major in secondary education.  The Elks look forward to seeing her in a classroom enriching the lives of future generations.  Kurtis Doehrman, from Loganville, was awarded $750.00.  Kurtis is a very involved student in both his school and community.  He helped lead his baseball team at Loganville High to a State Championship.  He has also been member of the Football and JV Basketball team all four years of high school.  The exemplar of volunteerism Kurtis works through programs in First Baptist Church of Loganville and his school to improve the lives of those around him.  This should not come as a surprise to learn his favorite quote is by Jackie Robinson, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”

Kurtis is president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter at his school and a member of many other clubs such as Beta, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Future Business Leaders of America, Leadership Next, and the Walton County Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership Team, where he grew up.  Kurtis’ plans for the future included going to college here in Georgia at either Georgia Tech or UGA.  He is unsure of a major but has a strong interest in history, social sciences, and government.  The Elks hope to see Kurtis fulfill his potential in positions of leadership and anticipate the day we view his name on a ballot. Congratulations Kurtis and best wishes in all your future endeavors
