HOOP SHOOT 2009

“Yes to Hoop Shoot - No to Drugs”

During the last 3 months Ray Edwards, Hoop Shoot Chairman for the Covington Elks Lodge 1806 visited every elementary school in Newton County. On his visits, he talked with the P.E Teachers about the requirements of the Hoop Shoot program. The Elks National Hoop Shoot program is open to all boys and girls ages 8 through 13. It is a free throw contest. Also with the help of other Elks, Ray presented awards to the 1st place and 2nd place winners of every school participating in the program. Then on January 25th all of the participants met at Newton County High School Gym at 1 p.m. to compete against each other to be the 1st place winner, both boys and girls in the county. An exciting event completed a lot of hard work by the boys, girls and the P.E. Teachers. The Elks are very proud of the local winners who will represent Newton County in the District Hoop Shoot during the month of February. The students are required to wear basketball or tennis shoes. In each school the instructor conducts the school contest during regular physical education classes.

2nd place girl in the 8 and 9 year old group is Jemelia Evans.  She is a student at Ficquett. Her Physical Education Teacher is Mrs. Donna Harris. Mrs. Cheryl Clark also assists her in class.

Hunter Phillips is the 1st place winner in the 10 and 11 years old group of boys. He attends East Newton and Mrs. Kathy Stewart is his teacher. She is assisted by Martha Worley in class.
